PICK OF THE DAY: The Tent by the Wood

|
The traditional family camping trip gets a makeover with Swallowtail Farm’s Tent by the Wood, near Rye

Everyone remembers childhood camping trips, complete with rain, days spent making sandcastles on the beach and charred sausages grilled on sticks over a wood fire. Website, Camping Expert estimates that more than 1.2 million Brits go on camping holidays every year and that number is set to double thanks to the combined effects of the recession and greater awareness of green issues. But if the thought of nights spent under canvas leaves you cold, the luxury tents at Swallowtail Farm in East Sussex, could make you think again.

Featuring hand-crafted beds, organic cotton sheets and a wood-fired shower, this is camping with all the essentials taken care of. The Tent by the Wood also comes with a separate cooking area, complete with a fire pit, compost toilets and a dinghy for pottering about on the pond in. Close to the mediaeval town of Rye and the beaches at Camber, The Tent by the Wood is great for family camping trips but is even better with friends. And with plenty of great pubs and restaurants nearby, burnt sausages will be strictly optional.

Prices for accommodation at The Tent by the Wood start at £270 for three nights.  See www.canopyandstars.co.uk for more information and to book.
