The end goal has always been sustainable farming; affordable, environmentally responsible food solutions

Interestingly, organics is a foodie phrase that has never sat comfortably with this fiercely independent, family-owned business, because according to founder Arran Stephens, ‘We were here long before organics became a trend and we’ll be here long after.’

For Nature’s Path the end goal has always been sustainable farming; affordable, environmentally responsible food solutions with long-term potential, or as Arran’s father succinctly stated, ‘Always leave the soil better than you found it.’

Nature’s Path adheres to a distinct triple-tiered bottom line where social responsibility, environmental sustainability and financial viability are all inextricably linked.

This refreshingly simple brand of ‘bigger picture’ thinking presents itself in a number of different ways, from the adoption of wind power and the championing of coastal clear ups, through to an unflinching commitment to radically reduce its significant packaging footprint with ever more compact packs, whilst simultaneously insisting that whatever packaging they do produce only employs recycled cardboard and vegetable-based inks.

Interestingly, it was the head office’s original on-site organic garden, where Arran still retains full composting responsibilities, that provided the seed of inspiration for the company’s highly publicized Gardens for Good drive, where a grant for $100,000 was shared between two community gardening projects in Vallejo (California) and Tallahasse.

Here the goal was not simply to increase the amount of healthy, chemical-free, organic acreage available in North America, but also to provide a little good news to two hard-working local communities that had suffered exponentially on account of the recent economic downturn.

Elsewhere the company’s Envirokidz programme (the redirecting of 1 per cent of total sales) has already raised in excess of $1.2million for deserving, not-for-profit organizations like the Dian Fossey Gorilla fund, whose primary goal is to support endangered species, champion wild habitat conservation and, most importantly of all, educate school kids about the very uncertain futures facing so many of our planet’s most breathtaking wildlife.

The third significant tranche of wider community initiatives that Nature’s Path actively champions is its long-term relationship with Compassion into Action, raising awareness and funds for the often overlooked plight of the growing homeless communities in the key Canadian cities of Richmond and Vancouver via the hosting of a series of organic breakfast fundraisers in return for cash or food donations, a practical, playing to its strengths programme, which in 2009 alone raised some $200,000.

Thank you for taking the time to read our entry, which we hope will encourage businesses big and small to look beyond simply servicing the immediate needs of its employees and shareholders in these telling economic times, by reminding readers that even the smallest stone can create a significant ripple.
