When did Ecologist relaunch online?
The Ecologist relaunched online on June 19th. This is when the last print edition of the magazine (July issue) went on sale. From that date the Ecologist Magazine became www.theecologist.org only, offering even more content and up to the minute debate on the vital issues affecting our world.
What if I have not received my new Username and Password?
You should have received a letter with your July 2009 issue or been sent an email on June 18th 2009 to inform you of your new Username and Password. If you have not yet received them, please contact 01371 851 879.
What if I had a subscription with Exact Editions?
The Ecologist relaunched online on June 19th 2009. This is when the last Exact Editions digital version of the magazine (July issue) went live. After that date the Ecologist Magazine became www.theecologist.org only, as a vastly improved website offers even more content and up to the minute debate on the vital issues affecting our world. Exact Edition subscribers have been sent an email which explains how you will still be able to access the current content as well as new content going forward! If you have not receive an email please let us know.
How much does an online subscription cost? And if I choose to take up the online subscription, how long will it last in relation to my print subscription?
It now costs just £20 per year to subscribe to the Ecologist website and get access to exclusive subscriber-only content. We wrote to all subscribers with their July issue (June 19th) with details of a special offer. Your new online subscription length was calculated by taking the value of the unused portion of your current subscription and the new monthly subscription rate and extending your subscription in line with the amount of money remaining on the account.
How will the move online affect institutional subscriptions through Exact Editions?
Institutional Subscription will still be accessible through the current system with Exact Editions. Each month the new subscriber only content online will be uploaded in digital format through Exact Editions and will be available to the current range of IP addresses for each Institution. This will mean that all current and archival content will be available to institutions.
Is there a “Subscription Only” area within the website?
Whilst some of the online content will be free to all to encourage the public to read, learn, get inspired, campaign and change the way they live, your subscription will give you access to the Ecologist’s premium content:
- A weekly Ecologist Investigation – 52 investigations per year
- Full access to the 2000-2009 archive – every page of every magazine
- A monthly exclusive subscriber email newsletter
- A monthly printable pdf version of our investigations to print, if you wish, and read off line
- Special subscriber only offers providing discounts and gifts from carefully vetted Ecologist partners saving you the value of your subscription!
What content will be available on the Ecologist website?
Many of your favourites are now on the new and improved website. This includes the Ecologist’s editorial pillars of News, Investigations, Take Action (now called Make A Difference), Comments and Green Living articles from Daily Life. You can also visit our Green Directory to find out what’s happening around the UK and be directed to the most important stories world wide. The Ecologist remains at the forefront of what is now the global mainstream issue of promoting an ecological agenda in the UK and abroad.
What are News or RSS Feeds ?
News feeds, also known as RSS feeds (Real Simple Syndication) are real-time updated alerts that tell you when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and video in one place, as soon as it’s published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.
In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages designed to be read by computers rather than people. By visiting the RSS feeds, you can see whenever a new article has been posted without having to check lots of sections of the website.
How do I get a news or RSS reader?
There are a range of free news or RSS readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer. Somer popular free RSS readers are Google Reader and Newsgator.
How do RSS feeds work on the Ecologist?
To subscribe to the Ecologist RSS feeds simply click on the orange RSS icon located at the top of every page (except the archive) in the blue bar. This will take you to a page where you can subscribe. This is what the icon looks like:
