Frequently Asked Questions: Resurgence and the Ecologist
updated 10 October 2012
The Ecologist has merged with Resurgence. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about the merger, and what it means for Ecologist subscribers and users
Why has the Ecologist merged with Resurgence?
This merger brings together two cutting-edge environmental publishers and creates a stronger voice for change. The Ecologist is returning to its roots in print and Ecologist content will once again be published in magazine format. From September 2012, Resurgence magazine will be published as Resurgence & Ecologist.
Resurgence magazine was first published in 1966 and the first issue of the Ecologist was published in 1970. The Ecologist and Resurgence have had a long association as pioneers in the environmental movement. Teddy Goldsmith (founder of the Ecologist) and Satish Kumar (editor-in-chief at Resurgence) worked together in 1972 and both represented Britain at the first UN Environmental Conference. Resurgence and the Ecologist share the same values and have worked collaboratively at forefront of the environmental movement for many years.
Why is Zac leaving the Ecologist?
Zac stepped away from all editorial involvement in the Ecologist after he became an MP. He is now handing over the leading role to Satish Kumar, who has been editing Resurgence magazine for almost 40 years. Satish Kumar has had a long and close association with the Goldsmith family and the Ecologist.
How will the change affect existing subscribers?

From 1 June 2012, Ecologist subscriptions will be serviced by Resurgence. From late June they will also have online access to Resurgence magazine. Resurgence magazine will be published as Resurgence & Ecologist from September 2012.
What will happen to my personal subscription data?
Your personal subscription data has been transferred to the Resurgence Trust.
What about my privacy?
How will the change affect registered users?
A registered user does not have access to the premium content on the Ecologist website, so there are no changes to the content that you can access. During the transfer process, registered users who did not tick the option: “I agree to receiving emails from partners of this site” were removed from the system (for data protection reasons your details could not be passed to Resurgence). You are welcome to register on the Ecologist site again. Please note, you will need to re-register using a new user name and password. We apologise for any inconvenience, but hope you understand that this is to protect the privacy of your personal data.
I'm having problems sigining in
If you were a registered user, your registration may have been deleted - see the question above. If you are a subscriber, please make sure you are using the correct username and password. If you are still having problems signing in please email email@example.com and include your username, password and if possible a telephone number.
Can I change my username?
No, this is no longer possible.
Can I change my password?
You can change your password to something more memorable by using the ‘Edit Profile’ function once you have signed in.
Can I change my details?
Subscriber details are being transferred to a new system. Once the transfer has been completed (end of June 2011) you will once again be able to change your details.
What will happen to my direct debit arrangement with the Ecologist?
If you have a direct debit agreement with the Ecologist, no further payments will be taken.
How and when will future subscription payments be collected?
We will contact you when your subscription is nearing its end (after adding the six months free period) with details of how to renew, so you can continue to receive regular copies of Resurgence & Ecologist.
What if I choose to cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription any time up until the end of the 6 months free period (Feb 2013) and receive the same pro-rata refund of your outstanding Ecologist subscription. For example, if at the end of June 2012 you had four months of an annual subscription remaining, you could cancel your subscription at any time up until February 2013, and receive a refund of 4/12 of your subscription. If you would like a pro-rata refund, please call 01371 851 879.
Will I have access to back issues of Resurgence magazine?
You will have access to forthcoming issues of the magazine that relate to the duration of your subscription. Access to these issues will remain even if your subscription expires. Individual back issues may be purchased in print or pdf format via the Resurgence website at a reduced rate.
How will I access premium content on the Resurgence website?
If you are an Ecologist subscriber, your details will have been migrated to the Resurgence system. You should have received an email notification containing a username and password that you can use to access pdf issues of the magazine on the Resurgence website. 'Paid for' content is only accessed in pdf format on the Resurgence website, not as webpages.
What if I already have a username and password on the Resurgence website?
If you are an Ecologist subscriber and your email address is already registered on the Resurgence website (or if you register between now and when we migrate users' subscription details), then you can keep your existing username and password for the Resurgence website. We will simply migrate the details that relate to your subscription and incorporate them into your existing user account.

Resurgence will continue to publish a newsletter which will be available to people who sign up to receive the free Ecologist newsletters. The newsletter will be published every 2 weeks, rather than every week as before. You will have the option to unsubscribe from the monthly emails if you no longer wish to receive them.
Will the Ecologist site continue to run advertisements?
Yes, we will continue to run advertisements on the site. If you had an advert on the site at the point of the merger, you will be notified of any changes that affect your advert.
