Not all eco-conscious clothing involves sackcloth. Hazel Sillver recommends three companies offering elegant, feminine dresses for the Christmas party season

Fashion Conscience

A fabulous online fashion retailer who source stylish eco clothing and accessories from the UK and overseas. Everything they stock has an ethical and eco-sound dimension, be it recycled, organic, sustainable or vegan material, non-exploitative and non-toxic production or fair trade commerce.

*Black Upcycled One-shouldered Party Dress, £45 by Reluxe. A great little black mini dress, made with end of roll fabric in the UK.

*Gondra Dress, £79 by Skunkfunk. Very flattering Oriental-style dress with Aztec prints; made with cotton and elastane and available in blue or burgundy.

One of the first companies to offer flattering eco-sound clothes. They now support fifty fair trade producer groups in fifteen developing countries and promote organic cotton farming. Where possible, People Tree make clothing by hand and avoid the use of chemicals, to reduce the carbon footprint. They also have stockists nationwide. 


*Michelle Red Wrap Dress, £58. A knee-length scarlet wrap dress that has pleating around the waist. Made from organic fair trade cotton.

*Delphine Black Dress, £75. A very elegant tailored pencil dress made from organic fair trade cotton. If you don’t fancy black, it is available in Santa scarlet. 

SUITS: Curvy, tall shapes. 

*Hedgehog Print Dress, £68. A vintage-look mini shirt dress with a flattering drawstring waist. Made with cotton. Their Black Floral Dress is similar.

This ethical clothing brand has been going strong for twenty years and actively supports the Free Tibet campaign. As well as organic cotton, they use hemp, rayon, soya, linen, silk, wool, Tencel and recycled rubber. They are stocked in various independent outlets across the UK, including Potassium in London and FAIR in Brighton.

SUITS: Slim figures. 

*PEPI Tencel Dress, £70. Fitted little black dress made with an eco-fibre called Tencel. Could be dressed up for a party or worn to work.

*Red Lolita Dress, £45. A long sleeved ruched dress made with hemp jersey. Hemp grows vigorously without agro-chemicals, making it a great eco-fabric.
