Visionary Soap has helped to develop infrastructure that allows individuals to start their own business

Visionary Soap is a soap and body care company whose whole range now carries the Fairtrade Mark. Our company has been entirely dedicated to fair trade since the business’ inception in May 2005. Our products consist of an organic body care range handcrafted by us here in the UK while incorporating ingredients from producers in Palestine, Ghana,Burkina Faso, Nicaragua, The Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Among the first pioneering body care companies to use fair trade certified ingredients, all of our products (38 in total) have now been licensed by the Fairtrade Foundation. All of our products have been specifically formulated to contain a very high percentage of fair trade ingredients, well above the minimum set requirement of 2 per cent for a wash off and 5 per cent for a leave on product. Our soaps, on average, contain 27 per cent fair trade ingredients and our body butters 99 to 100 per cent, for example.

For the last few months Visionary Soap has partnered up with Khayelitsha township in South Africa helping local communities by encourage poor adults to work and start their own small businesses with the aim to lift them from a life of poverty by teaching them to rely on themselves.

The primary focus of this work is to teach people to make soap, a simple endeavour that requires few resources that can sometimes be difficult to get in townships, such as water, energy and equipment. It is a social environment that encourages young adults to work in a sustainable business with like-minded peers and a steady income.

Visionary Soap has helped to develop an infrastructure that allows groups in these townships to start up their own small businesses and have sourced some of their fair-trade soap from these small township businesses. This means that every time someone buys soap from our website we are helping someone avoid poverty.

For those who take part in this scheme there is also the opportunity to get training from Learn to Earn to be able to run their own businesses and to expand their own small enterprises within their community in a sustainable way while also encouraging the use of fair-trade products.

Our vision is simple and straight forward - to produce premium quality products that people enjoy while at the same time incorporating values of social responsibility, environmental sustainability and holistic wellbeing. We believe in empowering communities through fair trade, contributing to our local economy and offering a luxurious yet down to earth option when it comes to body care.

Company Ethos
Visionary Soap Company has been a fair trade dedicated company since it began in 2005. All of their products now carry the Fairtrade mark, more than any other company in its industry in the UK making this is a great way to support fair trade producers and their families!

The company has also taken fair trade beyond the sourcing of ingredients and now into the manufacturing arena where they have forged an inspiring partnership with Township Trades, an innovative community enterprise in the Khayelitsha Township, South Africa, where the group is now making the majority of Visionary’s fair trade certified soaps.

Help us keep the Ecologist platform going

Since 2012, the Ecologist has been owned and published by a small UK-based charity called the Resurgence Trust. We work hard to support the kind of independent journalism and comment that we know Ecologist readers enjoy but we need your help to keep going. We do all this on a very small budget with a very small editorial team and so joining the Trust or making a donation will show us you value our work and support the platform which is currently offered as a free service.
