Bike hire scheme, London

The capital’s brand-new bicycle hire scheme has begun

Transport for London (TfL) has launched its long-awaited cycle scheme, bringing London up to speed with the Parisian Velibs and the Mobilitas of Rome.

The Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme hopes to encourage thousands more cycle journeys by enabling members to hire bicycles and return them to docking stations across central London.

For the first few weeks of the scheme, sign up for membership to receive a membership key (£3) - then you’re away.

Choose from 24-hour, seven-day or annual access (£1/£5/£45). Usage fees vary from £1 for an hour to £50 for 24 hours, though the first 30 minutes of any journey is free.

Casual usage is coming later in the summer, allowing users to walk up and hire a bike immediately, paying with a credit or debit card at the station, online or over the phone.

Help us keep the Ecologist platform going

Since 2012, the Ecologist has been owned and published by a small UK-based charity called the Resurgence Trust. We work hard to support the kind of independent journalism and comment that we know Ecologist readers enjoy but we need your help to keep going. We do all this on a very small budget with a very small editorial team and so joining the Trust or making a donation will show us you value our work and support the platform which is currently offered as a free service.
