CIWEM's Environmental Photographer of the Year 2013

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is delighted to present a powerful and thought provoking exhibition.

CIWEM’s Environmental Photographer of the Year 2013 is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography and video. Honouring amateurs and professionals of all ages, it provides an opportunity for photographers to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences, and to enhance our understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality. This year sees a major new partnership with Atkins, one of the world's leading engineering and design consultancies who are supporting the competition.

The 3,000 entries were judged on impact, composition, originality and technical ability by the 2013 selectors; Nick Reeves OBE, Executive Director of CIWEM; Nick Roberts, Atkins Strategy Director; Dr David Haley HonFCIWEM, Senior Research Fellow at MIRIAD Manchester Metropolitan University & Visiting Professor at Zhongyuan University of Technology; and award winning documentary photographer, Adam Hinton. Selected works examine issues such as innovation, sustainable development, biodiversity, poverty, climate change, human rights, culture, natural disasters and population growth.

‘These photographs and videos are some of the most powerful images anyone will ever see. They tell a breathtaking and compelling range of stories on the environment and on the condition in which we live. Shock and awe, beauty and despair - it's all there.’ CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves OBE

‘The final selection makes a very strong show with powerful rhythms in the groupings of images. And what emerges from those selected and the many excellent photographs that were not, is the despair, the joy and the passion of such a diverse understanding of our relationship to environment.’ Dr David Haley HonFCIWEM

‘Environmental Photographer of the Year has quickly established itself as an outstanding exposition of imagery that captures the complexity and humanity that underpins some of society's most pressing challenges. Atkins is delighted to be involved in this competition, and we are excited by the stunning quality and breadth of the images from around the world in this years exhibition.’ Nick Roberts, Atkins Strategy Director

The works will be displayed at the  Royal Geographical Society, touring to Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre, Cumbria, culminating at CIWEM's new headquarters, conference and members' facility in Farringdon, London in Autumn 2013.

Help us keep the Ecologist platform going

Since 2012, the Ecologist has been owned and published by a small UK-based charity called the Resurgence Trust. We work hard to support the kind of independent journalism and comment that we know Ecologist readers enjoy but we need your help to keep going. We do all this on a very small budget with a very small editorial team and so joining the Trust or making a donation will show us you value our work and support the platform which is currently offered as a free service.
