Public can borrow electricity monitors for up to 3 weeks in schemes under way throughout the UK

Cardiff Council has made 100 electricity monitors available for the public to borrow at 20 libraries across the city, from this week.

The loaning out of the monitors, that track your home electricity use and cost, follows similar schemes organised by other councils including; York, Lewisham, Southwark, and South Gloucestershire.

The monitors will be available for loan for a maximum of three weeks, which the council say will give residents ample opportunity to examine their energy usage habits.

Cheaper bills

‘Electricity bills can be difficult to understand and most householders are unsure of the amount of electricity they use on a daily or weekly basis,’ said Helen Northmore, head of the Energy Saving Trust Wales.

‘This monitor shows in real terms the energy they are using and the cost associated with that usage,’ she added.

The Energy Saving Trust say electricity monitors in households could cut up to 15 per cent of energy use and save people money on household electricity bills.

A quick Google reveals many more local authorities lending electricity monitors in this way. However, as students on my course* have brilliantly demonstrated, these gadgets are mere toys that produce superficial savings unless they are backed up by the knowledge and understanding of what their numbers mean. *Open University course 'Energy measurements at home' http://tscp.open.ac.uk/t152/
