Protest moves from Kingsnorth to Ratcliffe-on-Soar

Protests against coal power have moved onto E.ON's Nottinghamshire coal-fired plant after the energy company postponed plans to build a controversial new plant at Kingsnorth in Kent.

E.ON blamed the global recession and the fall in demand for electricity for its plans to 'defer an investment decision on the Kingsnorth proposals for up to two to three years'.

Caroline Lucas, Kent MEP and prospective Green Party MP for Brighton, called it a 'victory for those who have taken to the streets in the fight against climate change'.

'Kingsnorth has been nothing short of a PR disaster for the UK Government – and for E.ON, which has tried in vain, via an expensive marketing campaign, to convince the world that it is genuinely committed to a cleaner, more sustainable future,' she said.

Activists are now finalising plans to target another of the company's coal-fired power plants, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, in a mass protest later this month.

The Great Climate Swoop, on October 17th, will see protesters from a coalition of groups - Camp for Climate Action, Plane Stupid and Climate Rush - attempt to shut down the power station.
