Climate action groups launch public vote for next protest site

Climate action groups are asking the public to vote for the location of a mass protest later this Autumn.

Organisers from Climate Camp, Plane Stupid and Climate Rush have launched a website, The Great Climate Swoop, where users can pick which coal-fired power station demonstrators should try and close down in a mass swoop on the 17th and 18th October.

The choice is between Drax power station in Yorkshire and Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station in Nottinghamshire.

As the single biggest source of carbon dioxide in the UK, Drax has already been the site of successful protests before, including the first major Climate Camp in the summer of 2006. In June 2008, 29 activists stopped a coal train from reaching the power station.

Ratcliffe on Soar coal-fired power station is operated by E.ON, the German-owned energy company behind plans to build a new coal power station at Kingsnorth in Kent. In 2007, 11 activists blocked the coal conveyor transporting coal into the boilers.

Organisers of Climate Swoop say E.ON have been at the, 'forefront of the PR war for new coal in the UK'.

Help us keep the Ecologist platform going

Since 2012, the Ecologist has been owned and published by a small UK-based charity called the Resurgence Trust. We work hard to support the kind of independent journalism and comment that we know Ecologist readers enjoy but we need your help to keep going. We do all this on a very small budget with a very small editorial team and so joining the Trust or making a donation will show us you value our work and support the platform which is currently offered as a free service.
