Study sheds light on shopping habits

In a recession we all tighten our belts, right? Not necessarily, according to an academic at the University of Hertfordshire.

In a survey of 700 women, Professor Karen Pine found that some women use shopping as an emotional regulator, or a way of ‘anaesthetising’ themselves against life’s ups and downs, and 79 per cent would cheer themselves up with a spending spree.

One in four experienced feelings of regret, guilt or shame after buying something in the week prior to the survey.
