Californian Ocean Protection Council calls for a state-wide ban on Styrofoam packaging

Ecologist

Little angers environmentalists more than receiving food or products in Styrofoam packaging, and now the Californian Ocean Protection Council has called for a blanket ban on the use of the material in food containers across California.

In a strategy for reducing ocean litter – which also recommends introducing fees for paper and plastic bags – the Council calls for all of the state counties to follow the lead of San Franciso and six other trailblazers which have already introduced the Styrofoam ban.

The Council is advocating the notion of extended producer responsibility (EPR), which makes manufacturers financially responsible for the collection and disposal of waste arising from the use of their products.
