Winchester Student Union's one-minute video featuring comic superheroes 'Greenman' and 'Enviro Boy' pick up the 2012 Ecologist-sponsored NUS Award

Green superhero suits and comic book-inspired special effects gave Winchester Student Union the winning edge as their one-minute video featuring 'Greenman' and 'Enviro Boy' promoting recycling won the Communications Challenge Award at this year's National Union of Students Green Impact Awards ceremony in Manchester. Andrew Hodgson, General Manager of the Winchester Student Union, says ‘We're obviously delighted to win the Ecologist Communication Challenge Award again - we won in 2009/10 too - and the recognition that such an award gives really helps to give credence to all the many and various projects and practices we engage with to imbue everything Winchester Student Union does with a fair and green ethos.'

Asked how they came up with the superhero spoof, Andrew told the Ecologist, ‘We always knew that we wanted a mischievous sense of humour to pervade the project as we often find this helps to carry and make memorable serious messages. It came down to either a superhero spoof or a fake news report. Of course when the president, Seb Miell (Greenman) and Vice President, Jonny Brason (Enviro Boy) found out they could dress up as super heroes and run around campus, our decision was made for us'.

The Awards were set up six years ago to recognise Student Unions' efforts in greening their facilities and promoting positive change in environmental behaviour among their members. This year saw 41 Unions awarded Gold accreditation for their environmental efforts, with an additional 24 gaining Silver, and 23 Bronze. The growing number of accreditations clear proof of the desire among the country's student populations to green their communities.

Liverpool Guild of Students, Bangor Students' Union and Bradford Students' Union won the overall awards at the NUS national conference. Liverpool took the award for a large commercial enterprise, Bangor for non commercial, and Bradford for small commercial. The University of Wolverhampton Students' Union won the most improved prize.

Help us keep the Ecologist platform going

Since 2012, the Ecologist has been owned and published by a small UK-based charity called the Resurgence Trust. We work hard to support the kind of independent journalism and comment that we know Ecologist readers enjoy but we need your help to keep going. We do all this on a very small budget with a very small editorial team and so joining the Trust or making a donation will show us you value our work and support the platform which is currently offered as a free service.
